Experience a different kind of break
City breaks have risen in popularity over the last few years
, thanks to a growing number of low-cost airlines offering very competitive rates. City breaks offer a cultural alternative to traditional beach holidays as travellers discover famous and lesser-known attractions in capitals and major cities around the world. Europe in particular is a hotspot for city breaks, with accolades such as European Capital of Culture encouraging holidaymakers to seek out the best experiences in new destinations.
There are numerous advantages of city breaks over traditional holidays, one of the most notable being that they are much more convenient. With most major cities being within easy reach of international airports, it's easier to get from A to B without excessive driving or train journeys in-between.
The length of a city break can also be as long or short as desired, with many people swapping their traditional week-long holiday for several weekend breaks in different cities throughout the year. There are also many cities ideally suited to certain types of break - from romantic getaways in Paris or Venice to sightseeing in Scandinavian destinations.
That means the issue of where to go on a
European city break isn't straightforward, and everyone will recommend their personal favourite. Many destinations are ideal for all-round city breaks offering a little something for all the family, such as London, while others are better suited to history buffs.
Krakow in Poland is one such example, a magnificent city full of historical wonders that's attracting more tourists than ever now that Poland is a member of the EU. From exploring the city's Old Town and buildings such as the ancient castle and cathedral to retracing the city's heritage in the Czartoryski Museum, Krakow is a major port of call for culture vultures.
Another city that offers comparable cultural treasures coupled with a warmer climate is Barcelona, the capital of Spain's Catalonia region. Barcelona's attractions span the ages, from its charming medieval quarter through to its world-famous artists and modern achievements, among them the popular football team FC Barcelona whose home ground at Camp Nou is a top tourist attraction in the city. Art lovers will be well catered for on Barcelona city breaks too, from timeless masterpieces housed in the Museo Picasso to the city's architecture itself, much of which was designed by 19th century architect Antoni Gaudi.
With plenty of hotels and convenient public transport getting you where you need to be, city breaks are a perfect option for last-minute holidays.
