Experimenting With Resin: Add A Twist To A Professional Artist Canvas

Resin was traditionally only used to finish and seal artworks, however its popularity as a medium for art in its own right is growing, and growing quick. Using resin can add depth to your artwork, create a glassy look, and add interest to mix media pieces. For those that haven't worked with it before but have thought about it, you're in luck! Here are a few 'need to know' tips for using resin.

Prepare Your Studio

First and foremost, you need to be aware that resin is toxic. Use a mask and gloves when dealing with resin at all times. It is also a good idea to work in a well-ventilated area so you don't risk being affected by the fumes. As you will most likely be tilting your artwork to spread the resin, you will need to put a drop sheet on the floor of your studio. Purchase some disposable plastic cups to mix resin in, so you don't waste proper containers when the resin hardens.

Board Base

Resin is heavy, so it is important to use a well-supported canvas or non-canvas base. Primed or unprimed boards are perfect for resin artworks or mix media projects because the entire artwork is supported. Stretched canvases will warp, and potentially tear under the weight of resin.

Use Layers

Resin works best when used in layers with paint. Consider what areas of your work you would like to build up to create shadows and interesting three dimensional features. It is possible to use resin on top of collaged pictures, or objects, to add depth.

Remove Bubbles

Once you have applied the resin to your base, bubbles will begin to appear. These can be removed by breath, or low set hair dryers. The more technical, and arguably more effective option is a blowtorch. Ensuring all bubbles are removed means your artwork looks glassy and sharp, rather than opaque and uncontrolled. Of course, all artistic decisions are up to you, but the more popular approach is to remove bubbles.
