Again, cost will come into play here, but mills can custom-make your order to whatever length of slats you desire. Keep in mind the type of wood you have chosen though. The mass produced pre-finished flooring and those that are unfinished, in general is cut into random lengths from twelve to eighty-four inches, the latter being the maximum length while those in-between will have no set length or measurement. You could land up with a hotchpotch of randomly sized slats and this could affect the overall look of your floor negatively. Thus, the utmost care should be taken when you order your flooring. Be aware that when you do order a lower grade wood, it will automatically come in shorter lengths.

How wide can you go?

This will be determined by what type kind of wood you are after. Some woods cannot be cut into a particular width, because they cannot withstand the stress in the milling machines. Some mills, however, can give us a pre-finished slat ranging from two and a quarter inch up to five inches, or maybe even seven inches depending on the miller. The unfinished slats on the other hand can be cut into widths ranging from one and a half inch up to twenty inches wide.

Is grade really an issue?

For pre-finished solid hardwoods grade is not an issue and the consultant will probably not even know what you are talking about. The unfinished hardwoods are more gradable and you need to speak to a professional in the showroom who will show you exactly what they look like.

There are names like solid parquet or herringbone, which require sanding and finishing on site. These are top end woods and therefore pricey, but worth it, because that type of flooring especially those sourced from Johnson Hardwood Floors, ought to outlast a few generations to come.
