Explaining Karate And Mixed Martial Arts
In Fairfax, karate isnt the only martial art that can be studied in this Northern
Virginia city; various forms of mixed martial arts (MMA) are available. But just what is MMA?
Why MMA?
The story of the evolution of martial arts is an interesting one to follow through history.
Contrary to what you may believe, the martial arts did not originate exclusively in China, Japan or Korea, but in fact separate threads of different forms of these disciplines have arisen in different countries, through different cultures and at different times. Even within a single country and civilization, martial arts may have developed to serve different purposes and to express different cultural values, than might have been the case elsewhere in the same country.
In the case of some disciplines, their precise origin is not entirely clear and scholars sometimes debate just where a particular martial art arose and from what. Surprisingly, some may have had their origins in ritualized dance or drama. Some may have been closely associated with standard military personal fighting moves or weapons drills. Others may have initially been closely linked to formalized religious ceremonies and devotion disciplines.
What is clear is that over centuries, they evolved from their original origins to become some of the martial arts techniques that we know today including, well-known ones such as Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Kung Fu and Tai-Kwando etc.
Of course, during their evolutionary development, many of the above martial arts have incorporated elements from other disciplines in an organic fashion. Practitioners from past centuries might find some of the modern disciplines to be significantly different to the skills they knew during their time. That process continues today and in
Fairfax, Karate and other disciplines have merged and blended to form a powerful and holistic approach that is referred to as the MMA.
The basic theory
From ancient times, masters of individual martial art disciplines were keen to protect the legacies and traditions of their art but at the same time were aware of the need to improve and learn. In more recent times, one of the chief proponents of merging skills and disciplines was the legendary Bruce Lee, who became frustrated with what he saw as the overly regulated and restrictive approaches of disciplines such as Kung Fu.
He worked to synthesise a number of different disciplines into a more fluid and harmonised approach that he referred to as Jeet Kune Do.
Examining the specifics of that is not important at this stage but suffice it to say, the same philosophical approach of synthesis and integration are today progressed under the auspices of the MMA.
So, when speaking of MMA and Fairfax, Karate techniques are just one component of a broad portfolio of self-defence and personal discipline techniques taught to students. In the MMA, honor and recognition is duly paid to individual disciplines but modern philosophies for self-defence are not constrained by them.
