Explore A Historical Wonder With Cheap Flights To Warsaw
One of Poland's more modern cities, Warsaw doesn't boast the lengthy history of its neighbouring cities like Krakow, but it does have a lot to offer. Developed by the dukes of Mazovia in the 14th century, the city was protected by fortified walls and the Royal Castle, which can still be seen today. With its bustling city centre with the opera, theatre, shops and restaurants there is a real mix to this city. Take advantage of the many cheap flights here to experience the magic for yourself.
For some brilliant pictures, visit one of Warsaw's most recognisable landmarks - Sigismund's Column. Although only 22 metres, this 17th Century monument looks imposing, overlooking Castle Square in the Stare Miastro district. It was initially built to commemorating King Zygmunt III Waza in the 1600s, but was damaged by the Germans in the Second World War. It has since been restored, but the bronze statue seen at the top of the column is significantly different to the original statue there.
For a chilled-out evening, enjoy the area around the Barbican. Built in the 16th century, this building was built by an Italian renaissance architect. This beautiful building served as a fortified outpost for many years. Like many buildings in Warsaw, it was largely destroyed in the Second World War, but has been rebuilt, to be as similar to the original building as possible. This huge structure separates the Old Town from the New Town so is right at the centre of the city. During the evenings, it is a lively area with entertainers, live music and dozens of bars to choose from. Be sure to enjoy one of the delicious (and very cheap) Polish beers whilst in the area.
Be sure to visit the Monument of the Heroes of the Ghetto, on the site of the Jewish ghetto of the Second world War. This is a harrowing site, but one that is well worth visiting before taking one of the flights home. Built in 1948, it commemorates those that died in the horrific conditions in the ghetto and those that sought to fight against the Nazis in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. It's located in one of the most tranquil areas of the city, so it's the perfect place to sit down on one of the surrounding wooden benches and quietly reflect.
For those that are looking for Polish artwork, as well as one of the most beautiful palaces in the city, visit Krasinki Palace. Found in the New Town area of the city, like many other buildings in the area, the palace was bombed and almost completely demolished during the Second World War. Since then it has been completely renovated. Now it makes a great day out for those that are looking to see some of the most famous Polish painters work, as well as sculpture, modern art and video installations.
If you're a history buff, make the most of the cheap flights going from most UK airports to Warsaw. With such a tumultuous history, and developing so rapidly, it's a fascinating place to visit.
