Explore Bangkoks Temple Of Dawn At Captivating Wat Arun

Originally dubbed Wat Makok or the olive temple in its heyday

, the magnificent Wat Arun Temple was given its current name during the reign of King Rama IV. Located along the western banks of scenic Chao Phraya River, the Temple of the Dawn was constructed to serve as a testament to the nations cultural identity in the period when Ayutthaya was Thailands political and administrative capital.

With a famed facade that has adorned many a Thai postcard, poster and magazine cover, this monumental landmark in Bangkok is best viewed in the late hours of the day or sunset. The most breathtaking site within the temple compound is its central prang, which in actuality is a towering Khmer-style temple pagoda of 80 meters. Built to symbolize the heart of the universe and mythical Mount Meru, visitors are able to climb the prang via steps located on the outer surface. Once at the summit, guests can lookout on spectacular views offered by one of two terraces that adorn the main prang. The foot of the tower features numerous statues of animals and ancient Chinese warriors while the second terrace at the topmost point houses four sculptures of the Hindu deity Indra on board Erawan.

Other highlights include the smaller prangs on-site that are dedicated to Phra Phai, the god of wind. Decked with vibrant porcelain pieces and seashells that were once employed as ballast by Chinese boats en route to Bangkok, visitors will note that the smaller pagodas are no less mesmerizing than their larger counterpart. Six spacious pavilions or salas are also located within the complex facing the riverside. Constructed in green granite, this picturesque pavilions also encompass quaint landing bridges which also offer stunning views of the temples surroundings and the cityscape.

Guests must also explore the Ordination Hall at Wat Arun which includes a figurine of the Niramitr Buddha designed by none other than King Rama II himself. Decorated with stuccowork covered in multicoloured china, the halls entrance also features a central spire on its roof. Two sculptures depicting legendary characters Sahassateja and Tasakanth have also been placed at the entrance while several scenic gardens are also found within the premises.
