Explore Guyana While On Jaguar Safari
For those who have long dreamed of going to South America on a Jaguar safari
, a hidden gem of a destination awaits in Guyana. The continent is a gateway to the Caribbean, it has a long and interesting history of trade and exploration, but today remains relatively unknown to outside visitors making it a rare haven of old-fashioned charm and undisturbed natural beauty. Wildlife lovers who wish to discover a place like no other, while searching for South Americas striking fauna, will find this a rewarding paradise. Here are just some of the reasons why.
Introducing Guyana
One of the only mainland-based Caribbean countries, the Republic of Guyana is located on South Americas northern coast. Its capital, Georgetown, was established by Dutch colonists and today is host to the headquarters of the Caribbean Communitys secretariat; it plays an important part in the regions culture and politics while retaining a graceful old-world atmosphere. Beyond Georgetown, the country is spread with lush rainforests, through which vast rivers meander and a fascinating array of creatures roam. Its abundance of wildlife and extensive unspoilt forest (over 70% of its wild habitat is excellently preserved), as well as its relatively unknown status among other South American wildlife watching locations, combine to make it an unbeatable Jaguar safari destination.
Guyanas Wildlife
Of all the wonderful wildlife watching destinations in the world, Guyana is among the most biodiverse; it is rich enough in flora and fauna to stun even the most seasoned traveller and includes eight thousand plant species, over a thousand bird species, and an astonishing array of mammals, reptiles and amphibians. This abundance and diversity is thanks, in part, to the range of habitats the country encompasses - including coastal, mangrove, river, swamp, savannah, sand forest, evergreen forest and rain forest environments. The pristine condition of many of these has allowed life to thrive, and the diversity of plant life allows a rich ecosystem to flourish. As well as the famous big cats that draw visitors to a Jaguar safari, there are Giant Anteaters, Giant River Otters, Capybaras, Caimans, Tapirs, and Guianan Saki Monkeys to name just a few. The countrys smaller animals are equally delightful, from the bright Golden Frogs (one of its many endemic species) to the jewel-like birds that swoop through the canopy look out for the Red and Green Macaws, the crested Hoatzin, and orange-billed Toucans.
When to Go
Guyana is a tropical country with two rainy seasons, the shorter one running from November to January and the longer from May to August. While the rainy seasons are predictably wet, they are also a chance to see the forests at their finest. There will be lush growth everywhere and the countrys incredible waterfalls will be at their most powerful. It is, however, a unique and beautiful place all year round, and visitors can set out on a Jaguar safari in any season.
