Explore Hong Kong's Iconic Statue Square

Ideally located in the heart of Hong Kong, with the iconic Bank of China Tower to its east lies the equally renowned landmark that is Statue Square

. With the hustle and bustle of the modern day metropolis hovering around it at a dizzying pace, this historic monument is more than just a pedestrian square that sees the largest congregation of Filipinos on any given Sunday. It is in fact an omnipresent reminder of the nation's illustrious past and the monumental figures who shaped its future through the ages.

As one of the city's preferred spots for picnicking and congregating, Statue Square is frequented by locals and tourists alike who wish to sit by its fountain and watch the city go by. Weekends however veils the venue in an inescapable party mood as its chief visitors which consist of thousands of Filipino immigrants come together and revel in a get- together like no other.

Constructed during the latter part of the 19th century, the square originally contained a statue of Queen Victoria to celebrate the monarch's golden jubilee while a statue of HSBC manager Sir Thomas Jackson Bart was added in 1906 along with two bronze lions. It is interesting to note that all of the square's inhabitants were unceremoniously detained by the Japanese during the Second World War. But the end of the war saw the return of the monuments, of which only the Sir Thomas Jackson Bart statue occupies the actual square. Victoria Park contains the square's namesake monument while the lions now adorn the entrance to the HSBC building.

Along with spectacular views of central Hong Kong, the square also home to towering sky scrapers that dominate its skyline including the Legislative Council, the Bank of China Tower, the HSBC Building and City Hall. Visitors should also take a moment to appreciate the futuristic fountain located in the square which gives this historic site an air of modern sophistication.
