Explore The Amazing Jurong Reptile Park

Reptiles are cold-blooded animals that have been able to adapt to live in every single continent of the world except for Antarctica. Although feared by many due to their appearance, these amazing creatures are the undisputed masters of evolution that have managed to survive almost every challenge mother nature throws at them. As most reptiles are proficient in the art of camouflage, hunting and evading predators is relatively easy for these creatures as they blend in well with the surrounding environment. These essential features of reptilian genetic design are exactly what have given this class of animals the edge when it comes to survival.

Located in close proximity to the Jurong Bird Park, the Jurong Reptile Park is home to an impressive variety of reptilian creatures such as king cobras, crocodiles, pythons, anacondas and komodo dragons among others. While approximately 50% of the animals featured in the park are considered poisonous, they all have plenty of secrets to share with the visitor. Known as one of the largest reptile parks in Southeast Asia, Jurong Reptile Park has a daily Reptile Show which regular visitors often look forward to seeing.

Perhaps the most fascinating creature at the park, the komodo dragon is the closest living being to the mythical fire breathing dragon which most of us have heard about in one or many bedtime stories or have seen in fantasy movies. A mystery to modern man, until about 100 years ago, the existence of komodo dragons was considered a myth until they were first discovered in the early 1900s. Although these animals are known as scavengers since they primarily feed on carrion, komodo dragons employ a hunting technique which is quite unique.

Although they do not possess the ability to chase their prey down or incapacitate them with potent venom, these beasts secrete a lethal cocktail of bacteria mixed with their saliva. Komodo dragons deliver a single bite to unsuspecting prey such as buffalo and stalk them closely. Although the bite does not have immediate fatal consequences, the saliva gets to work infecting the wound which then passes to the blood stream. After the suffering animal can no longer move, the dragon moves in to devour its meal.
