Explore The Colonial Architecture In Asmara

The capital city of Eritrea, Asmara is considered to be among the places to see in

Africa because some of its attractions, like the colonial architecture built in Italian style. If you decide to go to Asmara, make sure you know a little more about the climate here as the dry season, happening during winter, may not be convenient for everybody. The summers are abundant in rains, transforming the dry land into a lush heaven. However, the climate in Asmara is quite forgiving since temperatures rarely rise over 30 degrees Celsius. If you want, you can pack some extra clothes as during the night, the temperature may get a little lower than you would expect in an African country. Also, be aware that there is no proper heating system or insulation here so, if you want to fight the chilly temperatures in the morning, you need to bring more warm clothes with you.

Enjoying the city's Italian architecture is no better done than on Independence Avenue. The locals call this street Kombishtato, and it is sided by wonderful palm trees. Here, you will find a wide array of cafes, shops, bars and cinemas, and you will even be able to see a stadium, located towards the north end of the street. Also there, you will see the Nyala Hotel, which is the highest construction in the entire city. If you want to do a little bit of shopping, you will also find here the most important marketplace in the city, right next to the cathedral on Independence Avenue. Don't forget to haggle as it is unlikely you'll be offered the right price at the start. You can go have a beer on the Nyala Hotel's top floor cafe, and take in the views of the city. The beer here is considered to be quite good and is named "Asmara beer".

Another place to visit in Asmara is the Biet Ghiorghis Zoo. This one is located on the Massawa Road, and is well known for the landscape. If you take a trip down the road, you will discover Bar Durfo. The views from this cafe are pretty amazing as the building is set on a cliff, overlooking the Massawa highway.

Don't forget to visit the village of Tselot, situated not far from the center of the city. You can take the bus to reach this location from the Meda Eritrea market. There are not many buses on this route, so you should get up early in the morning in order to catch an empty seat. The village itself is worth all the trouble, with its stone houses, old temples and the traditional way of living.

Not far away from the village, you will find the Martyrs National Park, opened for visitors about a decade ago. The landscape is what tourists come here to see. If you climb on the highest viewpoint of the park, you will be able to sit on top of the clouds and the views are quite amazing.
