The city Wollongong, situated in the New South Wales, is said to imply 'the sound of the waves' or the 'sound of the ocean' in the native tongue. It is known fondly as 'the Gong'. It is a metropolitan city situated south of Sydney, well known for its beautiful coastlines, botanical parks, industries and mines, among other things.
The history of the city can be traced back to the late 1700s when the early settlers started making it their home. Early occupation of the settlers was mining. Slowly, but surely, there began a kind of industrial boom in the city with hundreds of immigrants from all over moving in. These people, along with the native Aborigines make up the diverse population of the city.
Its beaches stretch for miles and miles. They become the hub of all activity during the summer months. The highly active and athletic populace takes up surfing and swimming. Fishing seems to be popular too. The more recent favorites are rock climbing and mountain biking. The various parks and botanical gardens offer refuge from the summer heat.

With a population as diverse as this city has, it is only to be expected that it has a very colorful social reputation. It is very well known for its various festivals and folk events that showcase the Aboriginal culture. These apart, there are also a lot of other sports events that are held here every year.
The art and crafts industry is also very well developed here. Thanks to its ethnic diversity, the artists explore a wide range of inspirations to come up with truly unique art. The natives also have their own crafts and art which again add to the art scene. There are several renowned galleries that also play a major part in the social and cultural events of the society.
The location of the city on the coast has ensured that it have great weather all year round, though summers can get scorching. The city also experiences rainfall year-round and is quite pleasant to visit any time of the year. It is approachable by rail- it is connected to Sydney by the Southern Pacific Railway line, bus, road or by flight.
If Wollongong's several attractions are not enough reason to visit, then the reputation of its breathtaking coastline views definitely is. It is said that one trip is never going to be enough to fully appreciate the things the city has to offer. Well, what are you waiting for? Go hit the Gong!
