Explore the true Paris amongst its passages and galleries

The city of Paris elicits a sense of wonder and mysticism just by hearing about it. One imagines strolling along soaking in the culture and atmosphere. However the truth is that the city does not always enjoy the perfect weather in which to do so. Rain and drudge, stifling heat and sun, dampness and cold are all part and parcel of what Paris goes through on a regular basis.

The 19th century locals had an interesting solution to this problem which has today become a tourist site in itself whilst at the same time contributing towards protecting the romantic image of Paris'.

The solution hatched up by these enterprising individuals was to create a series of interlocking and independent passages and galleries through which one could wander without being hindered by any weather or commercial conditions.

These winding passages and galleries are a covered series of pathways having a skylight through which gentle streams of light shine down on the mosaic of the black and white diamond tiled floor. The wooden ceiling lying between the intermittent skylights is gilded and painted cupids and rustic scenes dance across it.

The passages and galleries themselves house a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and eateries as well as quaint shops selling curios, antiques, masks, cosmetics, flowers and books. You can leisurely stroll through these walkways and indulge yourself or window shop to your heart's content (Parisians call this occupation window licking).

Most of the galleries have exciting histories behind their name or have been part of an interesting story. The Galerie Vivienne when it opened was the most luxurious of the Paris passages and galleries, and still continues to be so largely due to J-P Gaultier and Kenzo making it their base and showcasing fashion along the gallery. It holds historical significance as the place where Berlioz led the masses after the revolution, singing "La Marsellaise".

The Galerie Colbert was built in competition to Galerie Vivienne, being part of a large mansion. However it never quite achieved Vivienne's luxuriousness and today houses many official institutions. Apart from these there is the Galerie Viro-Dodat, Passage du Caire the longest one - Passage Brady and many more to choose from.

For your stay in the city there is many a luxury hotel Paris to choose from, but an exceptional choice would be Le Royal Monceau Raffles Paris. However be sure to book in advance as luxury hotels Paris such as this are in high demand.
