Exploring Central Europe On Foot
Introducing Slovenia
Introducing Slovenia
The grand architecture and cultural highlights of Vienna along with Austrias skiing slopes have long been a draw for visitors from around the world, but few think to venture to its southern neighbour, an unassuming country with a surprising variety of landscapes, climates and things to do.
Also bordering Italy and Croatia, and with a small coastline along the Adriatic Sea, Slovenia has been dubbed Europe in miniature due to the contrasting geographical features within its borders. These include the alpine region, the national parks and vast natural lakes and waterfalls, sandy beaches and hidden caves. Over half of the country is also covered by forest.
In fact, four major European geographic regions meet here: the Alps, the Dinarides, the Pannonian Plain and the Mediterranean. The climates within these regions range from sub-mediterranean to temperate continental to mountain climate.
Walking Holidays in Europe
For those not already sold on the concept of guided walking holidays in Europe, it should be said that the benefits of exploring an area on foot go beyond the obvious health benefits resulting from keeping active.
The things that can otherwise be missed are endless. Keeping to the roads to travel from one organised attraction to the next means missing out on the sights, sounds and smells of those off-the-beaten-track paths and the sense of satisfaction that comes with exploring corners of the countryside that few have beaten you to.
The knowledge and experience of local guides also means that getting lost doesnt need to be a concern, and the history of the area and other nuggets of information that can be gleamed are plentiful.
Walking in Slovenia
In Slovenia specifically it is the sheer variety of trails that makes the destination, as there are options for gentle meanders as well as challenging mountain trails in the beautiful Julian Alps.
The welcoming and often multi-lingual locals also help to create an hospitable environment in which to relax and explore, accepting as they are of visitors to their country regardless of where they have come from and where they are heading.
Guided walking tours in Slovenia also mean the opportunity for a sociable holiday where meeting like-minded people both from the UK and around the world is part of the experience. Walking with others creates a camaraderie and, when followed by a home cooked meal over a bottle of wine, can lead to lasting friendships.
