Exploring Crannies
I don't have a sense of direction
I don't have a sense of direction. I always get lost. Twenty years of living in the city and I still can't name the streets. In getting to places, I mostly rely on landmarks.
Anyway, most people would probably think that having no sense of direction must be awfully hard. Admittedly, at times, it could prove to be quite a hassle, especially if you are running late on a very important appointment. But I don"t really think it is much of a hassle. You see, I love getting lost. Yes, you read that right. I like getting lost. I treat it as an adventure. It is through the process of getting lost in alleyways that I get to explore every nook and cranny of the city. And it is through this process that I find interesting places that I wouldn"t have otherwise discovered had I stuck to my daily, boring route.
One time, I read a book that said it is better to not carry a map with you when travelling. This is not to say that maps are not needed. It is merely implied that if you want to discover things and explore, don't stick to a rigid schedule. You'll only get frustrated if it ends up not being followed. Why not go roam around and experience the place first hand? You can only do so if there is no strict schedule planned. And when you think about it, a rigid schedule can only make you feel frustrated at the end of the day. Instead of having fun, you might be disappointed. After all, delays are bound to happen sooner or later for nothing really ever goes according to plan.
Speaking of maps though, I have recently become fascinated with Google maps. Like I said, I have an awful sense of direction. And as much as I like getting lost and discovering a new corner of the city, there are simply instances when the nature of my appointment is urgent. Lucky for me, there is Google maps to the rescue.
There are also times when I just Google things for fun. Like the time I asked for directions from Canada to Japan or the time when I asked for directions on how to get to Italy from Australia. With due fairness, the directions are accurate. There are just times when the answers leave you gasping for breath. There was actually one time when the direction said I should kayak through the Pacific Ocean. I almost fell from chair from laughing.
Then it struck me. Perhaps local businesses, especially those whose locations are hidden away, should give Google Maps Optimization a shot. I am sure there are lots of benefits especially for those business who are not quite well-known.
