Exploring Fisherman's Wharf In San Francisco
Fisherman's Wharf has been a staple of San Francisco culture since the year 1946
. It began years before as a place where Italian emigrants settled during the Gold Rush.
Though the area is now mostly a home for tourism, many fishermen still use this area as the bay for their main fleet. As expected, Fisherman's Wharf has some of the most delicious seafood in all of California.
The port is home to the Dungeness crab, which is the staple of a great deal of restaurants and venders found there. All of the crab is freshly caught from the ocean, and after you experience the freshness, you may never be able to enjoy seafood in any other region again.
If you do not prefer the taste of game from the sea, you are sure to find another eatery more to your liking, as there are tons of great places to catch a bite while strolling through the pier. Let the scents of the plethora of different cuisines guide you to a place that you will enjoy.
A walk around the port will offer enough entertainment to keep you busy for a few hours. There are a number of shops; you can even stop into the drug store if you have forgotten items throughout your travels.
There are also quite a few street performers throughout the day and into the night. During the day, there are quite a few mimes, musicians, clowns, jugglers, and fire-eaters to wow you and your family.
At night, the bay turns into a hub of live music, dancing, and comedy. Those travelling without children may wish to explore Fisherman's Wharf during the evening hours.
One of the most famous attractions of Pier 39 is the sea lions that call it home for much of the year. Depending on the outside temperatures, you will be able to get a glimpse of these mammal friends, usually barking and sunning themselves on the rocks.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy this fantastic sight. Watch the sea lions play, eat, and nap in the warmth of the day.
Another San Francisco staple, Cable Cars, make rounds all throughout the area. If you are travelling from another part of the city, catch the Powell-Mason line at Taylor Street and Bay Street, or the Powell-Hyde line at Hyde Street and Beach Street.
An attraction fit for families is the Aquarium of the Bay located here. There are over twenty thousand aquatic creatures housed in this state of the art facility.
Here, you are able to walk through hundreds of feet of underwater tunnels, surrounded by your favorite oceanic creatures. You and your family will find yourselves mere inches away from animals like sharks, octopus, and bat rays.
There are a number of impressive exhibits where you can learn about the marine life of the bay and the types of measures being taken to protect the creatures of the ocean. There is even a touch pool where you and your children can pet leopard sharks, bat rays, and sea stars.
If you really wish to learn more about the exhibits, call ahead of time to see if you can schedule a personal tour or find out what times of the day are feeding times. This will be a fun, stimulating, and knowledge-expanding attraction that you will remember forever.
The sports fanatic will not want to miss a trip to AT&T Park, the home of the San Francisco Giants. Here you can see a beautiful view of the bay, all while watching one of your favorite Major League Baseball teams.
If you choose to get a behind the scenes tour of the stadium, you will find yourself visiting the dugout, an indoor batting cage, and maybe even the Visitors' Clubhouse. The tours last from ten-thirty to twelve-thirty each day, beginning in the morning, and last about an hour and a half.
Make sure to call ahead of time to schedule your tour and reserve a spot so that you and your family will not have to worry about it once you have already arrived on your vacation. Any trip to San Francisco is not complete without a jaunt to Fisherman's Wharf to take in all of the sports, sites, recreation, and fun that it has to offer those that visit.
