One of the inherent problems with building a wardrobe around the world of high fashion is that it will live and die by the trends of the season

The accessories and pieces of clothing that were in style this year are old-hat by next year, and this can leave people that move with the in-crowd, and who are sensitive to these changes feeling a bit self-conscious. As an alternative, one option is for them to become a setter of their own personal trends by coming up with some ideas for making custom clothing.

Probably the most obvious advantage of going off on one's own when it comes to their sense of personal style is the satisfying feeling that comes with venturing off of the beaten path. Different brands of clothing have different levels of popularity, and it's quite normal to find groups of people out in public places who all look essentially the same from a distance, simply because they all wear the same brands and styles of jeans or shirts.

Custom clothing fills the wearer with the knowledge that it's unlikely that anybody else is looking quite the way they are that day, and there is always the possibility that other people will see and like the uniqueness of their fashion, and adapt it for themselves.

One's ability to create unique articles of clothing depends heavily on the resources that are at their disposal. When it comes to actual design, creativity and the power of the imagination are the only real limitations. If it can be dreamed up, it can be worn. The practical problems come about when it's time to make the transition from the style that they have in their minds to something physical that they can actually wear, and the process of making customized clothing designs a reality can take a considerable amount of skill.

Making clothing from scratch may seem like the most obvious way to go, but it's also probably the most difficult. Apart from having access to the raw materials, some of the skills required include being able to sew, being able to permanently dye fabric, and being able to accurately measure out sizing in order to get the right fitting.

A much less time consuming route to success is to start with a finished piece of clothing, and then simply modify it to the point where it is unrecognizable in its original form, and therefore completely unique. There are literally thousands of ways to make a piece of a wardrobe unique, and a lot of the initial difficulty of crafting the base structure of the clothing is removed from the process.

Old pairs of jeans, for example, can be made new by adding customized embroidery, or by embedding false jewels in the fabric. This is an especially popular fashion trend among women. Even if there are signs of wear in the legs of the jeans, it can still be perfectly acceptable as a casual piece. After all, there are a lot of companies that produce pants that are brand new, but that are intentionally made to look tattered and frayed. This "worn" look lends a laid-back sense of carelessness to the wearer. As an additional benefit, it also stands to reason that re-purposing old clothing to create new, personalized fashions is a good way to save money over time.
