Exploring Marmaris

Marmaris is a Turkish port city located at Marmaris bay

, which rocky islets shelter it from the sea. Its ideal location with attractive surroundings has made the city popular with people from different parts of the world who like to enjoy a relaxing environment away from the bustle of modern-day city life.

The original city that stood here was known as Physkos and you can still see some traces of this ancient Hellenistic town on Asartepe Hill.

The Old Town

The Old Town of Marmaris will give you an insight into the early life in the town prior to modern developments. A peninsula that projects into a bay features a medieval castle around which most of the houses in the area are built. The old houses are partly made of timber.

When you descend to the foot of the hill, you will come to a harbor that is equipped relatively well. The harbor has landing stages for the car ferries going to and from Rhodes and berths for yachts. There are boat trips to different places such as Bodrum, Kaunos, Datca Knidos and Dalyan Delta. The Old Town also features a special bazaar, cafes and restaurants.

Kaunos

Ancient Kaunos lies about 30 kilometers away from Marmaris, towards the east, close to Dalyan Village. Koycegiz lagoon links River Dalyan to the open sea, and the village is between this lagoon and the sea. There is a boat that goes across the channel from the village to Kaunos rock tombs towards the west. The tombs, which were carved out of steep rocks, date back to the 4th century BC. Turkish archeologists have dated them to the 1st millennium BC. You can see them from miles away.

The Turkish government has protected this area because it is where the loggerhead turtles breed in the Mediterranean.

Mugla

Many people who travel to Marmaris miss the opportunity to explore Mugla because the main trunk road passes on its west side. Yet, this is a scenic town with delightful bazaars and steep alleys. In the old quarter are white houses that have large overhanging roofs that give them a special appeal. Overlooking the town towards the north is a medieval castle. The best views of the town are from the east. Unfortunately, the roads are not ideal for vehicles which is why people tend to miss its beauty. There are relics that give insight into the town's Islamic history. Ulu Camii is the oldest building in the town, which Ibrahim Bey Menteseoglu constructed in 1344. Other interesting sites are Ucerenler Camii and Sey Camii.

Datca

Datca is increasingly turning into a popular resort some 80 kilometers away from Marmaris. Leading to it is a winding hill road running along the Resadiye Peninsula. As you travel along the road, you will have some scenic views of the sea and beaches. Alternatively, you may reach Datca by boat.

There are also fishing charters that will help you explore Marmaris on the water.
