Exploring Tasmania's Colonial Past At The Narryna Heritage Museum

Housed in an authentically preserved Georgian home, the Narryna Heritage Museum showcases the colonial past of Tasmania. The Narryna was one of the first colonial houses to be built in Tasmania and was constructed just 33 years after the British established their stronghold on the island. According to historical sources, the house was built by Captain Andrew Haig who arrived from India in 1824 and purchased two acres of land upon his arrival. After spending nine years in New Zealand, Captain Haig returned to Hobart and commenced the construction of Narryna.

The house was a traditional Georgian four-square house built of brick and sandstone. The faade of the house which lends its distinctly colonial air is said to be made of ballast from Scottish trading ships. Despite taking great pains to build the Narryna, Captain Haig was not able to turn his warehousing business in to a success and was forced to sell his beloved house.

Within the next century the house would be home to a number of noteworthy Tasmanian personalities, turning the Narryna into a focal point of local culture and history. One of the best known occupants is George Washington Walker, who was a Quaker missionary best known for founding the Hobart Savings Bank.

Inside the Narryna is a collection of antique furniture, paintings and ornaments in traditional Georgian style dating back to the 19th century, such as Captain Haig's sea chest which was used on his sea voyages to update his log. Another interesting item among the exhibits is an oil painting of the sailing ship belonging to Sir John Rae Reid, which was commanded by Captain Haig himself.
