Exploring The World Of Loneliness Books
Loneliness books are some of the most popular forms of literature available today
. In fact, works of literature in which loneliness is the dominant theme are some of the most widely read in history, and many are still recommended reading to this very day. There seems to be something about loneliness that strikes a chord in everyone, which is hardly surprising given that we are all prone to experiencing the condition at some point in our lives.
Many loneliness books fall into the category of Gothic romances. There seems to be something the in the period that lends itself to takes of isolation, loneliness and depression, and these are among the most compelling works ever committed to print. Loneliness is a common theme of many well-loved classics including Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
But it is in certain books that loneliness takes on a more prominent role and its full nuances are explored. Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera, and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter all take on loneliness as a central theme, and the full extent of its depth and range are explored in almost frightening detail.
In the Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the familiar theme of unrequited love is explored with a powerful tinge of loneliness informing the entire work. The story of a disfigured man who falls for a beautiful woman in love with another, the book takes a painfully clear look at the various aspects of love, longing, disappointment, frustration and loneliness. The bulk of the work is set in 15th century Notre Dame Cathedral, lending both a somber solemnity and almost overpowering sense of loneliness to the story. As far as loneliness books go, this one is quite possibly one of the most striking and ultimately, uplifting works to be committed on paper.
Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera is a notable classic that still enjoys massive popularity to this very day. One of the few loneliness books that is just as compelling now as it was when it was published, Phantom follows the travails of a woman who was raised in the Paris Opera house to become a musician after her father dies suddenly. She soon finds her receiving guidance from what she first believes to be the guardian angle of music her father told her would come, only to realize that it was in fact the voice of a tormented musical genius. In spite of her fascination with the phantom, she later falls in love with her childhood sweetheart, and the subsequent turmoil and loneliness that ensues inform much of the events that subsequently take place in this longtime classic. One of the rare loneliness books that still resonate to this day, The Phantom of the Opera is recommended reading for anyone who has gone through the pain and trial of love unrequited.
