Exporting in Pro Tools

If you have read parts one and two of our three-part Pro Tools tutorial, you will now want to know how to export you project out of Pro Tools into a standard audio format. In Pro Tools this is called bounce to disk.

The Bounce to Disk option in Pro Tools has limited choices for conversion to many formats. You will be better off to export your project uncompressed for use on a CD, but compressed for use on the Web. When "bouncing" it is a good idea to bounce to uncompressed AIFF format, then using QuickTime Pro or iTunes to convert the AIFF into another format.

Before exporting, make sure that your project has been saved. After that, select the regions you want to export. To select multiple regions, hold down the shift key and click the regions you wish to export. Then, click on bounce to disk (this is located in the file menu). When you have done this, leave the bounce source unchanged and set the file type to AIFF. For web work, select the format Mono and for CD select the format stereo. Make sure the resolution is set to 16-bit and the sample rate is set to 44100. When you have done all of the above, select convert after bounce and click OK. Then, select an output destination for your AIFF file. Click save and your project will be exported.

If your audio is for use on the web, it will need to be compressed. You should aim to compress it to be about 10x smaller whilst keeping good sound quality. This level of compression is achieved by discarding enough data that the file size is small, but not so much that the audio quality overtly suffers. For example, we'll be reducing stereo tracks to mono, cutting the sample rate in half, and running the audio through a compression codec (compressor/decompressor).
