Exposures to Hazardous Drugs-Cytotoxic Drugs
Like antineoplastic agents, cytotoxic agents are also hazardous drugs. These perilous drugs are highly toxic and can cause cell degeneration when exposed. These disastrous chemicals can cause cell lysis that can loss membrane integrity (necrosis) and death of cells. Apart from this, it can also hamper the normal growth of cells and even cause Apoptosis which is a cell suicide mechanism.
According to various studies and reports, cytotoxic drugs are frequently used in drug manufacturing industries for development of medicines. These hazardous drugs can cure several diseases like cancer, psoriasis etc hence cytotoxicity tests have found that these are used in large amounts in drug manufacturing industries.
Cytotoxic drugs can cure malignancies by directly destroying the tumor cells. Due to their anti-inflammatory characteristics, they are capable of treating arthritis and other related conditions. Major cytotoxic agents used to treat rheumatic diseases and arthritis is methotrexate, azathioprine and cyclophosphamide. These hazardous drugs are very efficient in treating these disorders.
Cytotoxic drugs have proved themselves to be very powerful medicines that have the potential to fight against many diseases. They work by affecting the action and growth of various cells that causes swelling, joint pain, warmth and arthritis. Despite of so many benefits, these drugs are classified as perilous drugs because they have a number of side effects. They can lead to suppression of various cells like the white blood cells that prevents our body against infections and allergies. Also it suppresses the platelets that help the blood to clot and red blood cells that carry oxygen to different tissues and organs. Exposures to these drugs can cause severe health defects like loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, ulcers and sore in mouth, skin allergies and hair-loss.
It is also used in the treatment of cancer i.e. Chemotherapy. These harmful drugs are transferred from a vial to the syringe unit and then it is injected to an infusion bag. During this process, there is a possibility of disparity in the vial pressurization that can lead to exposures of these drugs and contaminate the surroundings. Hence, cytotoxic drugs should be handled with proper care and focus to prevent such situations.
