Extracurricular Activities: How Much Is Too Much
?
A child who goes to school is expected to participate in extracurricular activities. Not only will it benefit their academics and bodies, but it is also beneficial to their psyche as well. Sometimes the only way to get over the peer pressures would be to allow the children to socialize. There are some subjects in schools which require the children to participate in extracurricular activities. However, there will be times when these same activities would be way too much for the child. Here are what parents should look out for as signs that things may be too much for their kids. Health Numerous kids get involved in sports and that could cause some stress on their bodies. But it is true that the sports help the children gain self confidence. At other times it could be harmful for them. There are some children who would resort to taking some chemical substances to cope with the stress and demands of their sport . The drugs that many teens take to keep on going could be deadly. Unfortunately, many of the parents only find out too late. Grades. Some kids do too much extracurricular activity that they no longer have enough time to do their academic tasks. Some would no longer have the time for their numerous homeworks their teachers assign them. This may even include spending too much time on one subject while the rest are ignored. After the grades get obviously low, then the parents see too late that there is something wrong. Relationships with Peers. Most of the time the extracurricular activities may not even have anything to do with academics. Children could spend a lot of time with their friends or gang, they may go out too much on school nights, go to malls instead of attending school, go partying where the mood takes them, all because the pressure from their friends are hard to ignore. However, it may also be that the extracurricular demands are making it impossible for the child to spend time with their friends. There may come the point where they no longer even talk to each other for the other is too busy. Eventually the friends will no longer tolerate it and the child is left alone with no other friends to play with. Extracurricular activities are not supposed to overwhelm the child. In fact, it is not strange to hear that many times it is the parent themselves that place the pressure on their children and would do anything to make sure their children succeed even if it is against their child's beliefs. This should never happen. The activities are there to guarantee that the child would have a well rounded experience of life, not be overwhelmed to the point of drowning.
