Eyelid Blepharoplasty

The term blepharoplasty dates back to 1817 and was coined by Karl Ferdinand Von Graefe

. Around 10th century, it was Arabian surgeons who first devised ways to excise excess skin folds in the upper eyelids which resulted in impaired vision. In 1907, Dr. Conrad Miller wrote the first book on cosmetic surgery. His diagrams of blepharoplasty surgery are much similar to those in use today and his procedures are still used today. Over the period of time there has been a series of improvement in the procedure of blepharoplasty.

Now with the advancement in the field of medical science there are non- surgical options available for blepharoplasty. Lasers or botulinum toxins are used in this procedure. They are extremely effective and also the chance of swelling and bruising is much less.

The goal of blepharoplasty is to restore youthful appearance and in some patient it is to improve vision. As one ages their eyelids stretches which causes the muscles supporting them to weaken. As a result, fat starts to gather around eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows and drooping eyelids. Apart from the fact that these make one look old it also can result in impaired peripheral and side vision. Blepharoplasty can reduce or eliminate such impaired vision.

The process of blepharoplasty involves removal of excess skin and underlying fat from the eye lids. An incision is made along the crease in the eyelid and then the skin is peeled back. For removal of fat a puncture is made to the underlying tissue. Loose skin is then removed and incision is stitched. Blepharoplasty may also be performed with the help of laser. This is new way to perform the procedure and it also diminishes swelling and bleeding during and after the operation.

There is always some degree of risk involved with any surgery. However if the blepharoplasty is performed by a competent surgeon, complications are reduced. It is not recommended for person suffering from problems like diabetes or hypothyroidism. One can minimize the risks by following their surgeons instruction before and after the surgery.

Keeping aside all the pros and cons one should always keep in mind that they should undergo blepharoplasty surgery for themselves, not to fulfill someone elses desire or to fit in any ideal image.
