Eyelid Surgery Recovery And Possible Complications

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty

, is the operation that cosmetic doctors perform on upper and lower lids of the eyes. The procedure can be done on either the upper lids or the lower ones or both, depending on the physical need of the patient.

The operation consists of making incisions in inconspicuous places such as the natural folds and creases of the skin around the affected area so as to have not so visible scarring. Excess skin, fat or tissues are removed to accommodate the improvements needed to improve the patient's appearance.

Recovery

Recovery for eyelid surgery may take a couple of weeks to three weeks. Patients who will undergo the operation can expect to have swelling, bruising and some degree of discomfort after it has been done. In most cases, the patient can go home a few hours after the operation. Arrangements should be made about getting home since driving is risky at the moment.

Initially, the eyes will feel uncomfortable with soreness and possibly tears. It is best to follow the doctor's instructions regarding post operative care to allow the optimum recovery time and the least discomfort. Eye drops and ointments to alleviate dryness may be prescribed by the doctor and he or she may also warn the patient of temporary blurry vision and sensitivity to light for several days.

Cold compresses and ice packs help tremendously to keep the swelling and the pain down. It is best to always keep the head elevated to reduce the swelling and pooling of blood near the eyes. Strenuous eye activities such as watching TV for too long or staying on the computer are not allowed for about two weeks and resting them is mandatory.

The stitches may be taken out within the first week or ten days after the eyelid surgery but the patient is still encouraged to protect the eyes from sun and wind exposure for up to a month or so.

Complications

Complications may arise from eyelid surgery. These include inverted eyelids in which the healing is too tight that the lids turn inside out. This complication, called ectropian, commonly occurs with the lower lids and will need additional surgery to remedy. Retinal detachment, caused by holes in the retina, can also occur and is a serious complication that should be immediately brought to the doctor's attention for another surgical procedure to correct.

A milder complication is the development of an infection in the wounds around the eye or the eye itself. Antibacterial medications are usually prescribed after the operation but sometimes these fail to fully protect the patient. Stronger medication will be given or longer prescription duration may be given to eliminate the infection.
