Wembley's pitch consultant resigns
The company in charge of Wembley's troubled pitch has resigned. The surface has been re-laid 11 times since the stadium was reopened in 2007 and today's announcement by the Sports Turf Research Institute follows mounting criticism of the pitch. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp branded it a "disgrace" following his side's 2-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat by Portsmouth, while striker Peter Crouch said it was the worst he had played on at Wembley. The following month, Blackpool's Gary Taylor-Fletcher blamed the turf for the ankle injury he suffered in the Playoff Final victory over Cardiff. STRI has been the pitch consultant for the last 13 months and will finish its involvement with the stadium at the end of this month. Gordon McKillop, STRI chief executive, said: "We have had many constructive and positive discussions with Wembley over the last few weeks on what would be the best way forward to make significant improvements to the pitch.
Bluebirds reject Burnley's Whittingham offer
Burnley, who were relegated from the Premier League last month and are armed with parachute payment cash, tabled the bid earlier this week. But the Bluebirds' valuation of last season's joint Championship top scorer is much higher than that and they flatly turned down the Burnley offer. Whittingham who was named in the 2010-11 Championship Team of the Year is not the only Cardiff player to be in demand this summer.Striker Michael Chopra is another player attracting interest with Ipswich looking to test City's resolve with a bid around the 4m mark. However, City maintain they do not have to sell players and boss Dave Jones is looking to strengthen his squad. The Bluebirds made their first signing of the season in goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who turned down a new deal with Manchester United to return to the club where he had a loan spell during the 2008-09 season. Meanwhile, City will start the new Championship campaign at home to Sheffield United on August 7, the 2010-11 Football League fixtures being released yesterday. The game could see former Swansea City midfielder Leon Britton makes his debut for the Blades. In what is a busy start to the season for the Bluebirds, August also sees trips to Derby County and 2008 FA Cup final opponents Portsmouth and a visit from Doncaster Rovers. The first South Wales derby of the season against arch-rivals Swansea is at the Cardiff City Stadium on November 6.The return fixture in Swansea is on February 5, 2011 the Wales v England rugby international scheduled for the Millennium Stadium the previous night. Cardiff's hectic Christmas and New Year period includes stand-out fixtures against Coventry at home (Boxing Day), Bristol City away (New Year's Day) and newly-promoted Leeds United at home (January 3).
