FAQs on Guitar Lessons for Beginners

1. Should I buy a pick and a slide?

If youve just started to take guitar lessons and are wondering if you should get a pick, keep in mind the use of picks depend on what style of playing you want to do. For example, I've never seen a flamenco guitarist use picks. Another alternative could be to use finger picks. Some people never use picks at all and prefer their own very hard fingernails but thiscould make the playing of fast leads a bit more difficult.

Regarding slides, these usually come in two basic materials, glass or metal. Choosing one material over another comes down to figuring out the sound and feel that is right for you. Glass slides have a mellow sound, but they are more fragile and can break. Metal slides are sturdy and produce a sharper sound.

2. How long should my Fingernails be?

My only suggestion is: keep the fingernails on your fretting hand trimmed as short as possible without hitting the skin of course, then file them smooth. This way, as you play, only the calluses will really touch the strings and fingernails don't seem to be involved at all. As soon as you start taking your guitar lessons, you will notice that if you get lazy and don't trim them, they start getting in the way and playing becomes more difficult.

3. How long do I need to take guitar lessons before I start playing?

1-2 months: You will be able to play easy guitar songs.

3-6 months: You will start playing a bit more difficult songs, which require more technical elements.

1 year: You will be playing intermediate level songs, including many very popular guitar songs, riffs, blues, and so on. You will probably start getting a more definitive feel for barre chords at around this time as well.

2 years: With enough practice and guitar lessons, you could be playing most songs in 2 years. Learning a song at this stage is very quick, as you'll have mastered most technical elements already.

2-3 years: If you learned guitar theory during your guitar journey, you'll be able to improvise on the guitar as well.

5-6 years: After 5-6 years of guitar lessons, you can call yourself an advanced guitarist. By then, you'll be able to play anything you want.

4. Where should I learn?

There are many alternatives out there from private tutors to music institutes. I personally recommend Music for All Inc. I studied there for about 2 years with Dr. Hernn Zapata when I lived in Fort Lauderdale Florida. After that, I was forced to move to another state due to a new job opportunity, and have taken their online guitar lessons ever since.
