FIFA World Cup 2010: When will India be ready
?
So its finally herethe biggest event in the sporting history that has been dominating news headlines globally finally kicks off in South Africa this evening. Yes, it's the Soccer World Cupthe first edition to be held in the African continent. And from all possible accounts the sporting extravaganza should remain in news and the headlines, sports or otherwise, for the new month or so.
And the euphoria that the event has generated can be judged from the fact that even in a country like India, that is far from ever making it to an event of this stature, people are looking forward to the soccer treat. Sample this : the electronic companies are expecting a boost in TV sales, news reports indicate that beer sales will witness a major jump both on account of the World Cup and yes the heat, the hospitality industry will see an upswing in sales on account of food and beverages with all eating outlets organizing special events.
The media, in India has gone head over heels, about the event with all mediums whether its TV, print or the internet planning special coverage, pullouts and bulletins for the event. The soccer event is estimated to pump in about 12 billion into the South African economy. But even in India, as business news reports indicate, the World Cup will boost the economy on account of greater advertisement revenue and sales across various commodities.
The moot question now is that if an event for which Indian cannot even remotely qualify generates such frenzy, what would happen if we indeed were there. So isn't it time that the sports administrators in India begin some kind of a forward planning to ensure that India also makes it to important sporting events globally including greater participation in Olympics. Perhaps it's time we start thinking beyond cricket. The country doesn't lack talent, it's just that talent is nurtured by the sports bodies that are mostly controlled by politicians who are more concerned about retaining their position of power than sports.
The Soccer World Cup is perhaps an occasion for India as a nation to think about working towards trying to achieve higher standards in sports at the international level.
