Facts About Baby Sleeping Patterns

When you have a newborn, you'll find that baby's sleeping patterns can be difficult to get used to. As baby grows, her sleeping patters will stabilize and she'll be sleeping through the night. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with normal baby sleeping patterns so you'll know what to expect from your newborn. Though every baby is unique, they do for the most part stick to the same schedule of sleep.

As a newborn, from birth to 12 weeks, your baby will be sleeping around 14 to 18 hours throughout the day. You can expect 2 hours of sleep at a time, day and night. What this means for mom and dad is that they will have very little uninterrupted sleep. It's important for baby to wake up and eat to stay healthy. At around 6 to 8 weeks, you'll notice your baby will start to consolidate sleep, and sleep for longer periods at a time, offering much relief to the parents, as they are able to get in more sleep as well.

Around 3 to 4 months, mom and dad will be able to get more regular sleep, as baby's sleeping starts to follow a more regular pattern. This is when she'll begin to take naps, and will sleep around 12 to 15 hours total throughout the day.

As the baby approaches 6 months, you can expect 2 to 3 naps a day and a good amount of sleep at night. At 9 to 12 months, baby should be taking 2 naps a day and begin sleeping 11 to 12 hours at night. Around 18 months is when the afternoon nap will be the only nap baby takes and mom and dad can expect a full night's sleep for the most part. Getting used to their baby's sleeping patterns can be the most difficult thing for new parents.
