Lets start by looking at some statistics regarding drunk driving among teenagers. In the past month, just over 25% of teens used alcohol, with nearly 17% of those binge drinking regularly. Sadly, almost three quarters of all teens between the ages of 13 and 18 have imbibed alcohol by the time they graduate high school, and roughly 16% of teen deaths result from driving while intoxicated. As parents, we talk to our kids about alcohol and other drug use from the time theyre very young, so theyll say no thanks when offered a drink later on. So why do so many of todays teens die from driving while intoxicated? Heres the answer: Teens just dont think like adults do and sometimes make bad choices, often with deadly results.

Every state has laws governing drunk driving, but are they strict enough to deter teens from indulging in this behavior? Some are. In Massachusetts, for example, there is a no-tolerance underage DUI (driving under the influence) law that states if a young adults BAC (blood alcohol content) is as low as 0.02%, he will be penalized in the same manner as one whose BAC is above 0.08%, the legal limit. The penalties for driving drunk range from short-term revocation of drivers license and alcohol education/treatment to permanent loss of license and incarceration. Most teens know the laws regarding drunk driving but believe that one beer does not make them inebriated.

So what can we, as a nation, offer as a solution for drunk driving college students? First and foremost, we must use stronger methods to get the message into our teens heads that they are not only risking their own lives when they drink then drive, but possibly that of an innocent bystander, as well. Teens must grasp the reality that they will be held accountable for their actions, just as adults would be if they committed the same crime. We must make the penalties for DUI harsher and make deliberate examples of those who behave in this manner.
