Facts About The Presidential Limousines
Limousines are luxury cars well-suited for the elite and the wealthy
. Thus, whenever a limousine drives up, we hope to see somebody famous or important, perhaps an A-list celebrity, a rock star, a billionaire, a sportsman or a member of a foreign Royal Family. But if there's one thing the limousines are famous for, it is for serving as the most secure ride of the President of the United States. Through the years, the government has specially commissioned several limousines to serve as the official ride of the US President. Below you'll find some facts about these presidential limos.
The first presidential limo was called the "Sunshine Special" because its convertible top was always open. It was used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. The Sunshine Special was a Lincoln-K series built by the Ford Motor Company, but was specifically modified by the Brunn & Company, Inc. of Buffalo, New York. Initially, the limo was called "Old 99", in reference to the license plate that it held. It was in service until 1950. This presidential limo can now be seen at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
Another well-known limousine is the 1961 Lincoln Continental. This was the limo where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The 1961 Lincoln Continental was rebuilt after the JFK assassination to be armored and fitted with a bulletproof "Bubble Top" hard top. It was then used by Presidents Johnson and Nixon. This limo was retired in 1977 and was also on display at the Henry Ford Museum.
The Lincoln has been a major provider of presidential limousines. Aside from the two mentioned above, other Lincoln limos were the 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan used by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the two 1965 Lincoln Continental Executive Limousines used by President Lyndon Johnson, the 1969 Lincoln Continental Limousine used by President Richard Nixon and the 1972 Lincoln Continental Limousine which lasted for a decade serving several presidents such as Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.
The Cadillac is another provider of presidential limousines. The earliest model that was used was the 1916 Cadillac Series 53 used by President Woodrow Wilson and the 1928 Cadillac Series 341 town car used by President Calvin Coolidge. After the Pearl Harbor attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used a heavily-armored 1928 Cadillac 341A Town Sedan. Interestingly, this car was owned by Al Capone. It was seized by the Treasury Department after Capone was arrested. There were also the "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth" Cadillac convertibles used by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Acting as their replacements were the "Queen Mary II" and the "Queen Elizabeth II" Cadillac convertibles seen during administration of Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson. It was also President Eisenhower who rode the first Cadillac Eldorado during his inaugural parade in 1953. President Reagan also had a 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine and a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. The 1993 Cadillac Presidential Brougham, used by President William J. Clinton, was the first series of presidential limos built totally private.
The current president today, President Barrack Obama is using a Cadillac presidential limousine. It is dubbed as the "Cadillac One", following the nickname of the presidential aircraft the "Air Force One."
