Facts You Need To Know About Nail Biting

The fist point you should consider is that a great percentage of the world's people bite their fingernails

. Despite the fact that the vast majority of people are not conscious of this, several conducted studies state that 15-30% of the population chew their fingernails at one point or another.

Assuming that only about ten percent of today's population engage in the habit, it would result in an amazing 700 million people who bite their fingernails worldwide. So rest assured that you are not the only one suffering from this mainstream habit.

Another important fact to know is that nail biting doesn't discriminate. People from all kinds of cultures, backgrounds and ethnics gnaw their fingernails. It doesn't matter whether educated, uneducated or rich. All kinds of individuals are afflicted with the condition of biting nails.

One fact that many nail biters are unaware of is that the habit is typically sparked in early childhood. Also many more children than adults engage in biting nails and most children will outgrow the habit with increasing age. Only a small number will continue to engage in biting until after that time, sometimes all the way to the end of their lives.

Nail chewing can have a great many consequences in relation to health. Biting the fingernails and especially the cuticles can often result in open sores which can cause a painful nail infection. According to nail biters, such a fungal or bacterial infection can be highly painful and normally takes several months until the yellowish or greenish color is totally gone.

Another health implication that can be caused by biting the fingernails is the spread of bacteria. Just consider for a moment how many things like door handles, shopping carts and computer keyboards we touch every day. And nail biters often put these exact germs and bacteria in their mouth.

Another negative consequence of biting the fingernails is it can severely impact a person's social life. Nail biters are oftentimes very embarrassed when someone sees their bitten down fingernails. They then feel ashamed of themselves and invent all kinds of ways to hide their hands such as concealing them under the table, sticking them in the pockets or balling their hands to fists.

Especially in social situations such as when eating out in public, in a job interview or on a date, having bitten fingernails can be highly disturbing.
