Fahion Guidelines: Being Aware Of The Do's And Dont's

If you read fashion magazines and websites, you have probably seen lists of fashion "rules" and "do's and don'ts"

. The authors make it sound like these articles contain the secret to fashion success, when in fact they are designed to sell magazines. There are no absolutes in fashion, and you are better off following guidelines rather than strictly adhering to arbitrary standards.

This goes for even the most widely accepted fashion tenets. Don't be afraid to break away from the pack and assert your individuality from time to time. Below are some fashion rules you might consider breaking on occasion, for starters.

Never wear clashing colors: Many people believe that there are certain colors that clash, and others that naturally belong together. This isn't necessarily the case. There are degrees of clashing, and you can play with them.

Now some colors look terrible together, this is the far end of the color clashing spectrum. Other colors match up and blend beautifully. In between these two extremes, there are many possible combinations. Staying in the safe zone of matching is not how to make your fashion mark. Most stylish dressers are found right up near the far end of outright clashing, but not quite at the extreme end.

Wear bright jewelry only at night: This rule is not necessary - your jewelry will not be damaged by sunlight. Wearing a piece during the day should not cause harm.

It's not something you want to do all the time, but occasionally breaking out the 'evening jewelry' for daytime wear is an easy way to add a stylish twist to an outfit.

Play up eyes or lips, but not both: Many women believe that you can wear striking eye makeup but then need to have a neutral lip, or if you wear a colored lipstick you should be very light with the eye makeup. But there is no reason for this caution.

Choose colors from the same color family - you don't want a cool-toned lip and a warm-toned eye or the face will feel disjointed. Then, apply with a slightly lighter hand than you would if you were only playing up one or the other. You'll be surprised with how flattering the results can be.
