Too often people get caught up in the idea that failure leads to success, that they fail fast with the firm belief that it will get them to success fast. But, in truth, failing fast isnt what you need to be focusing on- its moving towards success so fast, that you fail fast in order to get to success even faster.
Let failure be your guide
The human ability to adapt to life is directly applied to the concept of failure. While it may seem that failure is a roadblock, it is merely a direction sign with an arrow pointing elsewhere. Failures shouldnt discourage you, they should actually build confidence. Though this road may not be the right way, it tells us that we are now one step closer to our goals. Dont let failure stop you, just redirect you.
Learning from your mistakes
This is the biggest part of failure. We learn from our mistakes. If we keep running into the same wall, we wont get anywhere, so make sure that when you fail, it teaches you all it can about what was done wrong and how it needs to be adjusted. And how do we learn? We do. We read, perform and fulfill ideas that become direction. If your failure is due to the fact that you arent doing anything, then its hard to learn. As long as you keep moving, you keep learning. No one ever got anywhere standing at the crossroads debating on which way to go. Point, go, fail or succeed, then move on.
Dont place the blame
Something that must be addressed is the blame game. Not all failures happen because of the wrong direction. Errors are likely to happen, whether its paperwork, numbers, or communication fails. But, as a business owner, youre in charge of all of these regardless of whether or not your teammates or subordinates were assigned to the task. It does no good to play the blame game, so address the situation, learn, and move on from there.
Failing the wrong way
The worst thing you can do is purposefully fail thinking that it will lead you to success. It sounds foolish when you read it, but the idea is basically that people think that just because failure helps guide you towards success, it doesnt mean you go looking to fail on purpose. Consider the designer of a boat. How many materials did that person use before they decided wood was a good idea. Rocks dont float (even small ones), so why bother trying them out. If it doesnt make sense to do something, it probably isnt going to work. This is where your knowledge and learning help you greatly. Dont just learn from your mistakes, pay attention to what has already happened to others before you. Work to educate yourself so that you dont fail the wrong way.
So, is it the idea of failing fast really the road to success?
