The fairy tale is widely known in both China and Japan. The heroine has different names like swan lady, plumage girl and red-crowned cane girl. The earliest record about the story appeared in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In the story, there lived a young man in a county called Xinyu, and once he saw 7 young ladies in a field. In fact, the ladies are not real human being. So what are they, they are bird spirits. The young man crept forward and stole the sweater of one of the ladies. When he walked to their front, all the other ladies flew away except the one whose clothes is stolen by him. So he took her home and married her. Several years later, the lady gave birth to three children for the man, but she still wanted to be a spirit instead of an ordinary person. So one day she got the place where the young man hid her sweater from one of her children and finally few away. What's more, she even took the children along with her and left her husband alone.

There are many similar stories well-known in many Chinese nations. Though the style may be different, the major content is the same.

This fairy tale is full of imagination and the plot is very intricate as well, which makes the story have strong artistic charm. Because of the old custom and opinion it contains, it is highly valued nowadays. Many Chinese and Japanese experts have made a special study on the story.
