Now that portrait painting has reached its 20th century heyday

Three weeks would be the average length of time it would take the artist to complete one portrait in a studio. Working on location would turn those three weeks of painting into only five days. Once her portraits are spread around the world, she could not have guessed where the commissions will come.
She avoids flattering her subjects but does paint them in the most flattering light against an abstract background or a low lying landscape. Subjects and artist come to some agreement regarding costume. Most often, she agrees to those who wish to wear their university robes or favorite dress for the portrait. She prefers an informal dress over a formal one for the portrait. She suggests what makeup to be used and also insists that hairdos be one day old at the very least.
As she paints, she talks to her subjects so that they talk to her back. She keeps their lips moving, so she can catch that going into a smile look. Any signs of boredom are clear in a portrait. Clients make decisions of the how much of their body is included in the portrait and whether or not they want to pose formally after seeing the book of photographs that show the artist's work.
There is a growing popularity for ink, oil, and tempera in sepia tones as well. On just one canvas, she would sometimes put several sketches of just one person, putting the most detailed of those sketches in the foreground. The product looks like a page from a sketch book. She has had this career for about 20 years already, and it began when a gallery owner wanted to display a self portrait the artist had made for a show in New York. It was the most memorable part of the show.
