There are a number of alternatives to leg curls and they are all superior
. You see the problem with leg curls are that they isolate the muscles from working with the rest of your body. This is a problem because your body was designed to work as a holistic unit. When one muscle group is working there are secondary muscle groups that share the load. When you use a leg machine for curls those extra muscle groups are excluded and eventually you become a collection of individual muscles rather than a whole body.
The all round best exercises to do for your legs are dead lifts and squats. These are the two supreme lifts at the gym. Dead lifts work your hamstrings and your lower back. But, they also develop your grip strength and you will be able to feel the effects of the lift all the way up to your traps.
Squats will work your quads and gluteus maximus but, as with the dead lift above, they will also work your back and abs. This is because your back and especially your abs work to stabilize your body during the lift.
If you would like to do variations of these lifts there are a number of them.
Lunges are also called split squats and work the same muscles that squats do just through a different motion. Romanian or straight legged dead lifts work the same muscles as well although they place more emphasis on the lower back. But, that is not all. There are sumo squats, frog squats even one legged squats.
I used to do squats with a barbell however I recently quit the gym and started exercising at home. I have discovered that, without a barbell regulating my range of motion I am able to come down much lower which, because of this increased range of motion, gives me a much better leg workout. Now, you could do this simply with the weight of your own body or, if you want to add weight, you can use some dumbbells.
If the dumbbells are not enough weight for you, you may want to try a cheap and easy fix. Rather than buying more weights simply buy a 50 pound bag of sand for a few dollars and put that into a back pack that you wear when doing your at home leg exercises.
By doing squats and dead lifts and their variations you will not only be performing a superior alternative to leg curls you will be getting a better all round workout which will leave you healthier and more fit in general.
