Fantasy Card Games- Too Dimensional?
I loved to invest in strategy games when I was in my sophmore year
. They frequently helped me to participate in group fun. Naturally fantasy card games pushed me towards electronic gaming and I would guess that this is typical for people that play board games. Even though I had been encouraged to enjoy these by teachers, some shame was felt when ever I played.
Fantasy card games compared to electronic gaming
Several of the mainstream fantasy card games released in the last 15 years that I have played are Legend of the Five Rings, Lord of the Rings TCG, and Star Wars CCG. A lot of these were regrettably programmed into online games. I am not against electronic gaming, they are so very similar to physical games, as both of them are a product of the same elements, but they each have opposite results in lifestyle. Perhaps it's important to say that the money spent on either is about the same. To compare production of computer games to fantasy card games; in 1995, 626 digital games and 47 fantasy card games were published. I found this information from wikipedia.org and gamesarefun.com.
Influenced by School and Family
Perhaps it's do to the fact that fantasy card games help with creative thinking and social interaction that I remember feeling motivated to play board games at school while still very young, and even got applauded when I offered to be the dealer. I recall some homework during grade school for math class to think of a board game. That was the first and undoubtably the last time I ran home excited to do my homework. What I made was naturally a forerunner of what became a lot of fantasy card games. That was the start of a long road for me, because I never stopped designing, despite the fact that the bulk of what I thought of was forgotten. Along with playing fantasy card games, homework got me writing and reading fantasy books like Harry Potter and the Redwall series. Console games still triumph over books since there are roughly 9000 titles in the database on isbndb.com categorized in the fantasy genre to weigh against 25 thousand titles at gamesarefun.com.
Public acceptance of fantasy card games.
Fantasy has been continually growing in popularity as a genre for movies during the past two decades. Based on the database at imdb.com, the ratio of fantasy titles compared to all movies was one out of 57 before the 90's and has grown to 1/26 and 1 of 23 from '91 to 2000 and from 2001-present respectively. Despite this growing interest it seems to me that fantasy card games are irredeemably thought of as 'nerdy'. A fact that hasn't gone unnoticed by gamers who play fantasy card games. My group of friends can be divided into 2 groups of gamers; the unashamed promoters of the cause and the quiet and possibly ashamed gamers. While one type of friend will larp about in the park, the other places himself on a bench and conceals the title of his book.
In part this article is an attempt to change which group I have always been in and enter the realm of those who openly love fantasy card games. I hope we can all abandon the prejudice that fantasy is desireable in digital games and film, but a reason for rejection in a hobby pastime. However, my real hope is for the reader to take a break from the moniter and learn to enjoy a better game.
