Fantasy Football For Money - Finding The Right League
Whether you are in a keeper league with friends or playing for big stakes in a Vegas league
, playing fantasy football for money can be as exciting as being in the stands watching your favorite team.
If you are interested in playing fantasy football for payouts, there are multiple league formats to consider. My first experience with fantasy football started 12 years ago with a group of 10 friends. We each pitched in $10 to pay for the online web site and set up our league. We drafted fifteen players (eight starter and 7 subs), split the league into 2 divisions, and played a regular season and playoff to determine the league winner. The winner of the league that year won a plastic trophy and the respect of the group. Now those days are over. We don't just play for respect anymore, now we play to win big money. The league fee is considerably more than $10, but so are the rewards. Now that money is involved, the excitement and the interest in our league has grown considerably.
The league still consists of 10 teams but the format has changed over the years. The league draft was originally conducted in the basement of one of the players, now it is done online with a conference phone number and timed selections. Our league, like most, emphasizes running backs so they are usually the first drafted. Each week, we need to start 1 quarter back, 2 running backs, 3 wide receivers (tight end can be included but you are not required to start a tight end), 1 kicker, and 1 defense. Along with the league fee, there are additional charges for all trades, free agents, and players picked up off the waiver wire. If you are active with the management of your team and like to trade and pick up players off the waiver wire, then your transaction costs can rise. This is good for the overall winners pot, but bad if your transactions don't pay off.
There are various formats that can be used for fantasy football leagues. Not only do I play in 10 person non-keeper league, I also play in a 14 team keeper league. A keeper leagues is a league where you can choose to keep a player who was on your team from the previous year and use that selection as one of your draft picks for this year. Keeper leagues can also have different variences, some allow you to keep more than one player, some allow you to keep players for 2 years and then they have to go back in the draft. Most leagues have their own personality but usually have the same player and scoring rules. For the most part, the scoring for each league is similar... 6 points for rushing and receiving touchdowns, 4 points for throwing touch downs, 1 point for every 10 yards rushing or receiving, 1 point for extra point, 3 points for field goals. Defensive and special teams points can also be awarded.
Fantasy football leagues can take on many formats. Survivor leagues are also very popular and can be another way to play fantasy football for money. The concept of a survivor league is easy, pick one NFL team to win their game each week. The catch is that you can not use the same team twice during the season. this is harder than it sounds, but fun to play.
This year, I will definately be playing in a new league that combines the format of a regular fantasy football league and that of a survivor league.
Suicide Fantasy Football is a new way to play fantasy football. You are able to select your team each week from the pool of players (week 1, all players are available to you). The trick is that you can only use a player once so you need to be strategic about what player to use each week and when to use a stud player. SuicideFantasyFootball.com is easy to sign up for and you have the ability to win some serious cash prizes. I am very excited about this new concept for playing fantasy football for money. It combines the best of both formats.
