Faq About Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty is commonly referred to as a nose job
. This is a cosmetic operation to change the shape of the nose. The size and design of men's and women's noses can make or break their facial appearances. Noses that are too big usually make the mouth appear tiny, the chin less pronounced and the eyes too small and closely positioned. One swipe of the surgeon's magic wand can make a gigantic difference. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the rhinoplasty:
-How much does this surgery cost? This will depend on several factors including the amount of work that needs to be done, whether the procedure will be performed with the open or closed method, the doctor's fee structure and the region of the country where the operation is taking place. When calculating total costs, a prospective patient should remember to include the surgeon, anesthesiologist and operating room fees. The totals range from $3,000 to $8,000.
-How long does the operation take? This will depend of the surgeon technique and the patient's individual needs. The average time frame ranges from one to three hours to complete this procedure.
-Will an overnight hospital stay be required? A rhinoplasty is most often considered to be an outpatient procedure, meaning that the patient will go home on the same day. There are cases that arise which call for an overnight stay, however, should complications occur or if other procedures are being performed simultaneously.
-What's an open procedure and how does it differ from a closed version? The open version of the nose job entails an incision below the nostrils for the surgeon to lift the skin in order to have more visibility. The closed method requires the doctor to work through the nostrils. There are pros and cons to each method and the choice will depend upon surgeon and patient preference.
-Will insurance cover this procedure? Cosmetic operations are not covered by insurance unless there is a medical reason for having the operation performed. A deviated septum is a nasal malady which can interfere with a person's breathing. An operation called a septoplasty will correct this; because it is a medical issue, health insurance will usually cover it. If done in conjunction with the rhinoplasty, a septoplasty may offset some costs as well as helping a patient breathe.
-How long will it take before a patient can return to work? A few weeks post-op will be enough time for substantial bruising and swelling to subside. Most patients return to work at that time. One year later, the rhinoplasty will have completely settled and healed.
