You will be able to make reasonable headway in the initial stages of the game as the amount of experience points you will gain by ploughing land and planting crops will be plenty for you to do so.

However, once you have achieved that, you will need more and more experience points in order to level up. If you want to gain more experience in Farmville, you will need to do more than just tend to your normal harvests. As buildings yield the most experience points, a good way forward would be to make some improvements to your farm.

Exeperience can also be achieved by putting up almost any decoration or structure. The trick is to pay careful attention to the amount of experience points you will receive for each item.

Experience points also need to be taken into account when deciding which crops to plant. Crops that take longer than a day to grow will give you 2 points whereas crops that only take a day to grow will yield you 1 experience point.

However, it is not a wise idea just to plant crops that gain you 2 experience points because, if you plant crops like strawberries that can be harvested every 4 hours then you will get you more than 2 experience points a day, providing you can get back to harvest them when they are ready. In order to really progress in this way, you will need to be well organised and keep track of your harvesting and planting cycles closely.

Erecting buildings on your farm is by far the best way to make quick progress in your experience. Saving up your money for those means you will be well on your way to unlocking all of the available items in Farmville.
