Fascinating Ancestral Temple Of The Chen Family

Many years ago a man named Chen achieved third place in the national highest imperial exam

. This afforded him a coveted place at the imperial court. The legacy of dedicated study leading one to attain good positions in life was one that was thereafter instilled in every Chen family member.

In 1890 the by then large Chen clan decided to build a temple, in Guangzhou city, in which they could offer sacrifices to their ancestors to enable them to attain such high positions and do well in life. For this purpose money was collected from Chen family members in 72 counties in the Province of Guangdong, as well as some who were abroad. The construction of this temple took 4 years, and was built along the traditional Southern Chinese style.

Comprising of 9 halls and 6 corridors, the temple is spread across 10,000 sq meters. The main ancestral hall is in the very centre.

This temple, apart from being used to worship the Chen ancestors, was also used as a living and learning quarters for those in the family who came to Guangdong to sit for the imperial exam.

The temple showcases the districts most intricate and best carving skills. These carvings are done on a number of mediums, namely brick, stone, pottery, wood, lime and iron. They depict various events of historical significance that have taken place.

The Guangdong Folk Art Museum also shares the same premises and the very best of traditional Guangdong Province is on display. This comes in the shape of lacquer work, enamelling, paper cutting, embroidery, and porcelain work.
