Two generations of parcel delivery service users have now grown up with the postcode system which is in force in the United Kingdom

. That means that adding that short line of alpha-numeric characters to the bottom of every parcel is, by and large, done instinctively by those who use the service.

But it is not the only means in use by which a parcel can be accurately delivered. Unlike with letter sorting, all parcels are usually placed into the right bags, and put on the correct van heading for their destination, at a location which can be a considerable distance from that final point of delivery.

That means that the use of postcodes, as a unique identification system for a well-defined individual area, is a vital part of ensuring that they get as far as the final stage of their journey.

If a postcode is also included, this means the delivery driver can simply input that into his vehicles satellite navigation system, and he will be guided to the right section of the right road where that delivery has to be made.

But often, a courier company driver will get to know a particular area intimately as he goes about his work, so he may simply come to know the different parts of his patch by their postcodes alone.

The system of postcodes works best for courier deliveries when the driver is asked to dispatch an item to a particular address on a long road. The postcode system splits that road into several sections, and will usually also indicate which side of the road a particular address is on.

It does not necessarily, however, take account of quirks in the numbering of houses on a road, and this is where there is no substitute for local knowledge. Blocks of flats in a single building can be one of the obstacles which thwart a satellite navigation system using postcodes.

However, the easiest postcodes to locate are usually those which have been specially assigned to an individual business or government department. This means that parcels destined for these addresses will often undertake the last leg of their journey using an internal courier system so relieving the delivery driver of the headache of having to find a single department within a building housing large numbers.
