Maharana Jai Singh, a ruler of Udairpur was responsible for the construction of the lake as early as the 17th Century. However due to heavy rains, the earth bund collapsed and the lake went into disrepair. Maharana Fateh Singh, another ruler, took it upon himself to personally sponsor the re-building of it; the lake was thereafter named in his honour.

Originally constructed for irrigation purposes, the lake is now the second largest drinking water source of the city, which adds to its importance. Adding to its scenic beauty are the 3 islands situated within the lake. The largest of these consists of a large garden the Nehru Park, a restaurant and a zoo! Visitors enjoy every aspect of this island especially the famous boat shaped restaurant which commandeers a beautiful view of the island and its surroundings.

The second island houses an Astronomy lovers dream a Solar Observatory. This high resolution observatory is strategically located and is an excellent spot from which to take solar images given its secluded location with clear waters below and clear skies above. The third and smallest island on the Fateh Sagar Lake is dedicated to a park which has a water jet fountain.
