There are two different kinds of liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease. Alcoholic liver disease is caused by over consumption of alcohol, either from binge drinking or from long time use.
Women are more likely than men to develop alcoholic liver disease. Your liver metabolizes the alcohol. The first stage of this illness is the storage of fat in your liver. It does not do permanent damage as long as you stop drinking.
If you continue to drink, you could end up with alcoholic hepatitis, this is the second stage.
The third stage is called liver fibrosis; this is from your liver trying to heal itself. The final stage is cirrhosis of the liver. It can be deadly for people who continue to drink. It can lead to the liver failing, cancer of the liver and eventually death.
The Non-alcoholic version of this disease is very different. Most people have it and do not even realize they do. There is a chance that as the fat accumulates it can cause scarring and inflammation.
