Fear....A Powerful Emotion
What are you afraid of?
As a little girl, I remember being afraid of the boogie man. I never understood who or what the boogie man was, just that I was afraid that he was hiding in my closet and that once the lights were turned out he was going to get me.
Does that sound familiar?
The only fear you have is the fear of feeling a feeling you don't want to feel. There are two main emotions in the Universe, one being Love and the other being Fear. Everything else is a variation of those two emotions. It is the feeling of fear that brings with it the anxiety, resistance, reluctance, anger, discouragement, overwhelm, panic, guilt or any other negative feeling you are experiencing. If you are feeling angry there is an underlying fear of something that is bringing that anger to the surface. If you are reluctant to do something or say something then fear is the underlying factor.
Fear of something or someone will show up as a feeling of fear but in most cases it will show up first as another emotion and most times you don't even see it as fear. You are often consciously unaware of what it is you are really feeling.
I remember one time when I was flying from B.C. to Ontario and there was a young girl sitting next to me. As the plane was about to take off I noticed her grabbing onto both sides of her seat with a look of terror on her face. I asked her if she was alright and she immediately responded, "No", I'm not alright, I'm scared to death". As I tried to calm her down and talk her through the take off, she grabbed me and buried her head against my arm. I understood her fear because I experienced the same thing for many years whenever I would fly anywhere.
Once we were in the air she apologized and began to explain how she hated to fly but if she wanted to keep her job she had no other choice. I told her how iI had experienced that same fear at one time and she asked me how I was able to overcome it. I asked her what it was exactly that she was afraid of. Her response was, "I'm not sure, I just don't like planes". I told her that in order to overcome her fear of flying she first had to recognize and understand what exactly it was that she was afraid of. After a few minutes of going back and forth as to what it could be she concluded that it was her fear of dying. She was afraid that the plane would crash and that she would never see her family again.
There are people to this day that will not get on a plane because of a fear, an illusion of what could happen.
Most of your fears are based on things that haven't happened yet. It is a fantasy in your mind rather than a fact. Much of your conditioning will cause you to fear certain things and although your fears seem very real they are an illusion. When you experience fear you are not perceiving things as they really are. You think that things are standing in your way but they aren't. It becomes an obstacle when you think about the possibility of a negative result and it is based on beliefs most of which are false. It is fear of the unknown that keeps you afraid. We could describe fear as "False Evidence Appearing Real."
Imagine being a child who comes from a home where you are constantly abused. Your subconscious mind will react to the abuse by creating a belief that "others abuse me". That belief is stored in your subconscious in order to protect you in the future. As you grow up you have this preconceived belief that people are abusive.
This continues to affect you for the rest of your life. It affects your thoughts, feelings and the decisions that you make until you learn to recognize and deal with your fear. You approach people with the belief that they are abusive and may cause you pain so your reaction is to protect yourself by attacking first or withdrawing to prevent being attacked. You are never able to fully express yourself and your whole life is negatively influenced by the pain you experienced in the past.
Many people never learn to recognize, understand or deal with these fear based beliefs and so they continue to be driven by them, some even becoming criminals in our system. When we choose to face our fears and do what needs to be done in spite of these fears we experience courage.
Face Your Fears
Rather than living our lives in the past or the future it is important to live in present time as much as possible. Being present and living in the moment leaves us nothing to fear since fear comes from past experiences or what we perceive could happen in the future.
A very simple yet effective exercise that will bring you back to present time if you find yourself drifting away is to say, "I'm back". Once you have done this just look around you at your surroundings and take 2 deep breaths.
Facing your fear first requires that you acknowledge it. Welcome it to you without trying to get rid of it or suppress it. Now notice where it is located in your body and as you focus on it take 3 deep breaths.
The next time you are faced with fear choose love instead.
