Oxidized bitumen is derived through a continuous or staggered blowing process in which high grade Bitumen is heated up to 300 degree centigrade under a controlled environment and blown with air in a chimney. It results in the oil content being removed from the Bitumen, thereby leaving it completely oxidized. Chemicals are added to reduce the blowing time and also to have better control over the blowing environment in order to produce different grades of high quality Oxidized Bitumen with very low investments.

Applications of Oxidized Bitumen

Producers of roofing materials are one of the largest consumers of bitumen after the road construction industry in many countries. There are many countries which manufacture and use bitumen felts and mastic asphalts both for domestic as well as commercial roofing and vehicle parking purposes. There are different types of bitumen used in the roofing industry. This varies from use of oxidized bitumen to other softer bitumen grades. Oxidized Bitumen is much preferred to other bitumen types because of its high softening point which helps in greater durability even in extreme climatic conditions. This type of Bitumen is also used by the water proofing industry since Oxidized Bitumen adds insulating properties to the coating material being used.

Industrial Applications

The panels used for sound deadening in house hold appliances and cars contain Oxidized Bitumen since it has good sound dampening properties. Further, Oxidized Bitumen is a major component in the manufacture of carpet tiles since it provides greater dimensional stability and help in preventing the tiles from cracking up due to either high or low temperatures.

Features of Blown Bitumen

Blown Bitumen is a compound that is predominantly used as an anti slip layer in the piling industry. It is used in the manufacture of roofing felts, sound dampening felts and is also used as an under carriage sealant in the automobile industry. It is also used frequently as a joint filling compound and also as a sealant. Apart from these applications, Blown Bitumen is also used in a variety of domestic applications as well. It is also used in the manufacture of marine mastic that is used in the oil and gas industry.

Some of the features of Blown Bitumen are that it is a very highly durable compound. It is chemically stable and a very flexible compound that is also completely water resistant.
