FedEx Fix - How to make golf's FedEx Cup more Interesting
The media will hype how interesting the race to get into the Barclays (and subsequent tournaments) is, but in reality, nobody cares
. Even a year later, there are still ads on TV about how exciting Heath Slocum's win was last year because it kept him in the playoffs. It was exciting because it was a good tournament, but everyone knew that Tiger would end up winning the playoffs... and he did! The bottom line: The FedEx Cup is boring. Remember 2008 when Vijay just had to get to the first tee on time in The Tour Championship to win the playoffs? Boy that was a real thriller! As it stands the top 125 get into the Barclays, top 100 into the Deutsche Bank, Top 70 play the BMW and top 30 into the Tour Championship. Here is what I propose: after the top 125 is set, the points all get reset to zero, kind of like playoffs in every other sport! From there the points accumulate like normal, top 100 play week 2 and then the top 70 play week 3. The top 24 players in total points move on to The Tour Championship, which is... wait for it... MATCH PLAY! The top 8 will get a bye while the bottom 16 will play an extra match. This gives an advantage to those guys that are playing well. Once the matches are set, the points are thrown out and the money is awarded based only on The Tour Championship. This would be WAY more exciting and would put major (see what I did there?) pressure on the tournament and actually make it meaningful. If this format were adopted it is still quite likely that the big names would make it through to at least the third week and likely into the Tour Championship matches. This would solve the problem of the FedEx cup being a joke and would add another match play event to the tour, which has been talked about all over the place for a few years.
