With the recent economic changes, many families are trying to find ways to get back to basics and concentrate on quality, cost-effective solutions. My son, who is three, loves to help measure the ingredients and tell me when it is pancake time because the water is dancing in the skillet.

While it may seem like a very minor change, it has been exponential in the experiences my family has gained. My son loves to learn how to cook, and I know I can add extra fiber to the pancakes, swap out turkey bacon for pork bacon and keep us all a little healthier. In our house, we add extra fiber. But, we also add cinnamon, bananas, zucchinis and molasses to seven-grain bread for a breakfast toast.

For sandwich breads, I often add squash puree, wheat germ and dill. For desert breads, why not add onion powder, jalapenos and sun-dried tomatoes? The sky is the limit as far as what homemade bread you can bring to the table. And, with the home bakery bread machine, you will not spend hours looking for a place to store it or fight for counter space to use it.
