Fences Make Good Neighbors
When we first moved into our present home, the houses only had chain link fences between them
. The people behind us were older, their children late teens, we didn't see them or hear from them much. Time passed and a younger family moved in. While at first we thought this would be fun for the kids, it quickly became a pain. If one of our children had a birthday party the neighbors would line up their children along the back fence to watch and make continual comments. We would always invite their children if it was age appropriate but when our older children had parties and the neighbor little kids yelled through the fence the entire time, we knew it was time to get a new fence.
These particular neighbors were good people just inherently nosy. After we built our fence the mother of the house would call over and ask who was jumping on our trampoline. She could only see the tops of their heads and couldn't figure out who it was. Reason number two that we installed a fence between our houses! They would ask questions about what was going on inside the house also when they couldn't see clearly, thus the installation of heavy window dressings. Good people, just too much interest.
When we build our fence, they not only didn't pay a dime for it, but watched us install it without drilling a single screw. Years later they did a big remodel and addition to their house and wanted a pretty vinyl fence between the houses at this point. They were shocked that we didn't want to pay for it. Good people, strange neighbors. We have a perfectly good fence, it has served us well, I am not a big fan of stark white vinyl fencing, something bone or more earthy tones are more to my liking. I have to admit the fence is pretty peeking up behind our wood one, complete with vinyl lattice and post caps, they did a nice job.
Our backyard is now a hodgepodge of fences. Our yard borders four other homes and each have put in their own version of vinyl fencing. We have left our wood one in place but peeking over the top is four different kinds of fencing and post caps. We have a fence quilt.
While we love all our neighbors we are glad we have now two fences between each of us thoughfor a little privacy, as fences certainly do make good neighbors.
