Fencing Your Yard
One of the first things you notice when you drive by a home is the fence
, or lack thereof. Fences provide privacy, a definite boundary, and a frame for your home.
Fences also provide a convenient way to keep small children and pets in a specific area. In most suburb areas, fences are not attractive. They are usually faded and falling apart.
This is the opposite of how it should be. A fence should add the extra touch that makes your home stand out.
There are many different types of fences that home owners can choose from when looking to improve the look of their home and yard. Wood fences are the most popular fences by a lot.
They are relatively cheap but blend with every color and can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Wooden fences are also seen as environment friendly.
However, without the proper quality of paint or finish, the timber will rot and become useless and un-repairable as time passes. Today, houses that have modern looks prefer brick or cement walls.
You can select any color you would like for a cement fence. However, these types of walls are more expensive than wooden fences.
Another option is the strong and durable steel fences. These fences can creak and whine when the wind blows, so make sure you are comfortable with these noises, before you install one.
Stone fences are not quite as popular as these other varieties, but they can be very beautiful. Even less popular than stone fences are fences made out of other natural materials such as bamboo, cane or reeds.
There are many factors that should be kept in mind when considering putting a fence around your yard. The first thing that should be though about is whether or not there are local laws and permits that restricts the installation of fences.
Most of the rules concern various qualities of the fence. For example, they may not allow fences that are over six feet high.
You may also want to ask a neighbor about their experiences with installing fences. They may have found that a specific kind simply does not work or they may suggest another kind that looks and works great.
The second thing that should be considered is the cost of various fences to install and to purchase materials. Timber and other natural products cost less than brick or stone fences that have to be manufactured and cut.
The third thing to consider is the height of the wall. You will want to be connected with the street and be able to know what is going on.
Be sure to keep the wall short enough that it does not hinder the view of street. However, you also would like privacy.
There will have to be a happy medium between these two desires. Under any circumstances, never build a wall that completely cuts you off from the outside world.
The fourth thing to consider is the strength and durability of the fence. The last thing you want to do after building a fence is spend all of your time maintaining and repairing it.
Brick, stone, and steel fences are obviously strong and durable. If you install a wood or other natural type fence, be sure to protect it from plants that produce vines.
The vines can cause great damage to your fence. Even though they may not seem like they could cause too much damage, their combined weight is very heavy and can pull a fence over.
It is similar to the object lesson with sticks. It is easy to break one stick, but very difficult to break an entire handful of sticks.
The last thing that should be considered is the installation of the fence. Consider hiring a professional, a friendly neighborhood carpenter, or a son to install the fence.
Think about the time you would need to install it yourself. The price and times costs of each choice will have an impact on your decision.
However, after you have considered all of these things carefully your decision is sure to be rewarding.
